Who is Enrique? I’m a Christian, husband, brother, friend, recruiter, gym grinder, Movie buff(Marvel), Leadership Theory nerd. My parents emigrated from Hermosillo Sonora Mexico when they were young. I was raised in Mesa Arizona. As a young kid I was a little punk. Hung around people who did not make me better. I grew up with two amazing driven brothers, so I kinda had to do something good with myself. So I buckled down and focused on being a better me. I grew up with solids values in life. I am in debt to my parents beyond belief. I have also been blessed with mentors through my life that break me down to build me up. In my twenties I have grown a lot, I have developed a career, a family , and a mindset that has helped me continue to wake up every day (5AM) and give every day my best. I always think to myself. “Man if I can get this far in life and be ok. Imagine what a young boy or girl can do if they turn on their leadership today?”
My faith is important to me because it’s what helps me hold steady and always find direction. Secondly my wife, she is the most intelligent, hardworking, driven person. My family, parents and brother. They push me to be better since, well the days of me being a little chavalo. Of course my friends who have become family are important to me. I always tell people, “You are the average of the 5 closest people to you.” So I try to be around great people. In addition to all these things I find leadership theory a topic that literally consumes my days. I tend to read a lot of books, and Blog from time to time. I hope that my children someday look back at my facebook feed and learn how to be leaders. Oh and I like to go to the gym, I may not look like I do but it’s my place of escape.
Lastly, my life purpose is to impact every person I come in contact with for the better. My goal is that my tombstone reads. “Amazing husband. Caring father. Tremendous son. Thoughtful brother. Best friend. Helpful coworker. Generous stranger.” However point in time today. I am still figuring out my purpose, not in a bad way, but in a way that feels optimistically enthralling.
Did you attend college? If so, how did that impact your life? I had the honor of attending George Fox University; I graduated in 2010, with a major in Spanish. George Fox helped shape my young mind. It helped me build strong habits. I comically tell friends I became a man at Fox. Yet I know that what I really mean is I evolved from, “Punk little kid with average…. Everything.” To a, “Mindful, young man who learned and realized that leadership matter.”
What has been the biggest challenge you have had to overcome? I have never suffered a day of hunger, homelessness, or things that many people unfortunately experience. For me my challenge I believe is finding my voice. Understanding how to best tap into my skills to serve others. I have always tried to do more, before I should. Sounds silly; however when you are in your mid twenties, working a corporate job, come from a culturally rich background, and have leadership oppression. Then it kind of seems like a challenge.
What is the one thing you are working on daily? I read books. Spiritual, relationship, and leadership based books.
One piece of advice you wish someone would have given you during college or professional career? Sit in the front row. Do more then you are asked for. Do the job no one wants. Always remember there is always room for improvement.
